What is an etching. We usually handle an etching every day. Each time we handle money, that is an etching also known as intaglio (a design incised or engraved into a material) This is usually hand etched using a number of tools like a gouge or bur. In most cases an acid is used to remove metal like copper or zink to make the etching (intaglio) plate. Once you are finished with the drawing you ink it up and put it through a printing press on very high end acid free 100% rag paper. Than it drys and is signed and what you are left with is a beautiful piece of art.
This is a simplified explanation if intaglio but I hope you get the idea.
